My 7 Must-Haves for every Senior Dog
After many years with my senior dog, I’ve discovered a few things that noticeably make our everyday life easier and that are good for him.
Here you’ll find my personal favorites: products that have proven themselves, that I use myself, and that I would recommend to anyone caring for an older dog. Essential, practical and chosen with love.
🛏️ 1. Orthopedic dog bed – because good sleep is healing
Old bones need gentle support. An orthopedic dog bed relieves joints, eases pain, and gives your senior dog restful sleep, night after night. A must-have for a better quality of life in their golden years.
🥣 2. Elevated food bowl – easy on the back and comfortable
For many senior dogs, eating from ground level becomes a challenge. An elevated bowl makes eating easier, takes pressure off the spine and joints, and helps your dog enjoy mealtime again.
💊 3. Joint supplements – support from within
When aging joints hurt, natural supplements like green-lipped mussel or collagen can help. They support mobility, have anti-inflammatory effects, and can give your dog new joy in life, all without harsh chemicals.
💧 4. Water fountain – because drinking keeps them healthy
Many older dogs don’t drink enough, which strains the kidneys and circulatory system. A quiet water fountain with flowing water encourages drinking and helps keep your senior properly hydrated. Simple, effective, and healthy.
👅 5. Lick mat – licking fun for gray muzzles
Slow licking calms the nervous system, supports digestion, and helps reduce stress. Especially for older dogs with dental issues, a lick mat is gentle on the tongue and a great activity that helps prevent boredom.
The mat supports healthy eating, is easy on the joints (no frantic gulping), and helps your dog savor their food. Simply spread it with soft food or pastes and the licking fun is ready to go!
🧸 6. Puzzle toys
Small puzzles, big impact: snuffle mats or lick mats keep your dog’s mind sharp without physically overexerting them. Perfect for cozy days at home.
7. Dental Cleaning Wipes – better quality of life through healthy teeth
Healthy teeth are extremely important for senior dogs: they prevent pain, support good digestion, and protect against secondary conditions like heart or kidney problems that can be caused by bacteria from inflamed gums.
Regular dental care supports not only chewing but also your dog’s overall health. Alternatively, brush your senior dog’s teeth once a week with a special dog toothbrush and toothpaste. 🐾🦷
